Wildschönau

Have you noticed, that there is a dragon in the coat of arms of the Wildschonau.
This dragon has according to the legend a lot to do with the origin of the valley
and then specifically the part in which Multhal and Auffach are situated. What
was actually the matter ?Well the present valley was in earlier days a large lake,
which ran from Oberau till way past Auffach.
It was as large as the Achensee. The lake had 2 overflows one via Niederau and
one via the Kundler Klamm, they are both still there.
Now as the story goes there dwelled a fire spitting drake and he made life pretty
unbearable especially for the inhabitants, who were living high up in the mountains.
One day a farmer succeeded in killing the dragon by menas of a trick. But before
the beast was completely dead he bit, during his death agony the rock party right
through and that’s how the lake ran completely dry.
The dead cadaver was to blame for the outbreak of the plague as a result of which
any people died.
Only one man from the Wildschonau and a young girl out of the Brixenvalley
survived the plague. They got to know each other and got married. Their offspring’s
are the present inhabitants of the Wildschonau.
People who want to know more about this splendid valley do well to pay a visit to
the slide performances ,which are being held weekly. also a video tape will give a
good impression of the Wildschonau. Then there are various museums, which will
show you something about the history.
